My iPad is not charging via USB

Some users report that their iPad shows a message “Not Charging” in the status bar when its connected to some computers or USB charges.

The issue is simply that the iPad has heftier charging requirements than iPods and iPhones, and some USB ports—especially those on older computers and most USB hubs—don’t provide enough power to charge the iPad during use. That doesn’t mean lower-power USB ports can’t charge the iPad at all; instead, whether they can charge the iPad’s battery—and how quickly—depends on how the iPad is being used.

The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it’s in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

How do I make sure my iPad is charging properly?

  • Use the 10W wall socket that comes with your iPad
  • The ports round the back of your Mac or PC usually are ‘high power’ USB, try that first before the front ports.
