In iOS 4.3, there is a new option in Settings that lets you decide the function of the side switch. You can either keep it as a mute switch or just choose Lock Rotation to bring the screen rotation lock back. The iOS 4.3 is expected to release in March. As of now, you still need to rely on the software rotation lock to lock your iPad’s orientation.
